Human tooth is a special friction pair in our body, and its excellent tribological properties are the guarantee of its normal function. Considering that the tribological properties of human teeth are strongly dependent on its internal micro-structure, therefore, study on the tribological properties of internal micro-structures within human teeth has important theoretical values and practical significance. Micro-tribology testing techniques were used in this project. At first, with the subjects which have same natural status, the mechanical and micro-tribological behavior of internal micro-structures within teeth, such as enamel rods and inter-rod enamel, were studied, and then further investigation of size effect on the friction and wear behavior of human teeth were conducted, aiming to reveal the respective roles and synergistic effect of enamel rods and inter-rod enamel in the process of tooth friction and wear; on this basis, the effects of factors, such as age, gender, pathological changes, etc, on the friction and wear behavior of tooth micro-structures were investigated, aiming to reveal the microscopic nature of tooth friction and wear. This study would help deepen the scientific understanding of tribological behavior of natural biological friction pair, provide important theoretical basis and key technical support for bionic tribological design, the development of bionic dental restorative materials and clinical treatment for excessive tooth wear.
