Enhancing rolling contact fatigue and wear resistance of rail steels through aging-treated laminar plasma strip quenching technology

The application of laminar plasma discrete quenching (LPQ) technology to enhance the wear resistance of railway tracks has been a notable advancement. Nonetheless, it has been observed that LPQ-treated rails experience a reduction in rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance. To tackle this concern, this paper introduces a novel surface treatment approach that combines discrete quenching with aging for railway rails. The study delves into the wear and RCF damage mechanisms of aging-treated laminar plasma discrete quenching (ALPQ) rails. The findings reveal that the aging process induces the precipitation of supersaturated solid solutions within the hardened layer, consequently elevating the RCF resistance of ALPQ rails. Following appropriate aging treatment, nearly complete elimination of fatigue cracks on the rail surface is achieved.
