Use of a copolymer capable of being obtained by radical copolymerization of a mixture comprising: - monomers m1 which are ethylenically unsaturated and which carry phosphorus groups, - monomers m2 which carry a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chain, as protective agent for metals and lubricating agent for metals in a naphthenic or paraffinic oil.2. Use according to Claim 1, where the copolymer comprises at least 2 phosphorus groups per chain, preferably at least 5.3. Use according to Claim 2, where the copolymer comprises between 10 and 15 phosphorus groups per chain.4. Use according to one of Claims 1 to 3, where the copolymer has a number-average molecular weight of less than 60 kg/mol, for example between 5 and 50.5. Use according to Claim 4, where the copolymer has a number-average molecular weight between 10 and 40 kg/mol, preferably between 10 and 30 kg/mol.6. Use according to one of Claims 1 to 5, where the phosphorus group carried by the monomers m1 is a - P(OH)2(=O) or -O-P(OH)2(=O) group, optionally in all or part in a deprotonated form, or else a -P(OA)(OB)(=O) or -O-P(OA) (OB) (=O) group where A and B are identical or different alkyl groups.7. Use according to Claim 6, where the monomers m1 are vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) monomers.8. Use according to one of Claims 1 to 7, where the monomers m2 are chosen from: - acrylic acid esters, of formula:         CH2=CH-C(=O)-O-Rh - methacrylic acid esters, of formula:         CH2=C(CH3)-C(=O)-O-Rh where Rh is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chain, preferably an alkyl or alkenyl group, typically comprising from 8 to 30 carbon atoms.9. Use according to one of Claims 1 to 7, where the copolymer of use according to the invention is prepared by bringing into contact: - the ethylenically unsaturated monomers m1 and m2, - a source of free radicals, and - optionally, an agent for controlling the radical polymerization.
